Which roof colour to choose depending on the style of the house?

When choosing a roofing colour, the first thing to pay attention to is the architectural style of the house. There are several styles and each of them has different characteristics. It is important to find out which architectural style has been used in order to make the right choice of both the roof colour and the building materials that will be used for its construction.

Traditional style - for this style of house, the most common roof choice is a classic copper or red roof. This style is more typical of older construction. The colour of a traditional style roof is part of a palette of warm tones, evoking associations of security, warmth and cosiness. This effect will be enhanced by the choice of wavy tiles. Traditional is the most frequently chosen house style and therefore the most frequently chosen roof type.

Modern style - unlike the traditional style, the modern style is best combined with roofs with a cool colour palette. The most suitable roof colour for the modern style is mainly black, white or grey, such as silver or graphite. This roof colour usually determines the choice of roofing materials, such as metal profiles for tiles.

Minimalist style - The design of a minimalist house usually includes the use of modern elements, so the roof colour in this case is usually black or another dark coloured roof, which is usually made of roof panels or valcprofile.

Rustic - the most common building material used in this type of construction is tile metal profiles. The rustic style is characterised by a high aesthetic colour, so that green, copper and brown are the most popular roof colours in this case.

Scandinavian style - for houses built in this style, the basic roofing colour is usually grey and its various lighter shades. In this type of construction, metal profiles are usually used for roofing , thus emphasising their flat profile.

Mediterranean style - there is plenty of room for expression here. The colour palette for this style is large. The most popular roof colours are warm shades of yellow, copper, red or brown. This type of project also tends to include shades of green and blue.

How to match the roof colour to the facade?

When matching the colour of the roof to the facade, it is useful to remember that it is much easier and cheaper to renew the facade or its colour. When choosing colours for the exterior of the building and for the roof, it is the latter that should be considered primary. Which colour to choose for the roof once the facade has been painted? We recommend that you follow the guidelines listed below.

White facade - the most versatile colour available, it goes quite well with any roof colour, although a common combination is a white facade and a red roof, which can be seen in both urban and rural areas. However, this is not the only combination. As white is a very versatile colour, you can dare to use it in any combination, although of course you should not overdo it so as not to disturb the overall aesthetic.

A facade in blue or green - in the case of these colours, roofing should be chosen very carefully - it is very easy to cross the line between kitsch and ugly. Brown tiles combined with green tones are a very good solution. An ebony or chocolate colour is ideal for the roof and, in combination with the colour of the facade, will soften its cool tone. For a blue façade, light grey tones will be just in time.

Stone and brick facades - if the material used to build the house is exposed, a muted roof colour is recommended. Shades of beige, yellow and brown are ideal for this purpose. Designers shall choose such colours to maintain the aesthetics of the building material. The ageing effect of the tiles is also an interesting solution.

Facades in yellow shades - this colour range is best suited to rustic tiles in various shades of light brown and red, which blend very well into the style of the building and give it a very classical look, whatever the dimensions of the building.

What colour should I choose for my roof?

Despite the misleading information that often appears in advertisements, painting a tin roof with metal paint is a bad idea - this type of enamel is exposed to harmful conditions that can cause unwanted, damaging and irreversible damage to the roof material:

  • susceptibility to mechanical damage caused by the shrinkage and stretching of the tin due to high or low temperatures,
  • cracking and fading due to prolonged exposure to sunlight,
  • corrosion due to contact with snow or rain.

Such damage may result in the need for partial roof replacement at additional cost. Oil and chlor-rubber enamel paints are not suitable for roofing. Which paint to choose? Acrylic or polyvinyl paints are preferable as they are weather-resistant and more resistant to shrinkage and stretching of the tin, unlike oil and chloro-rubber paints.

Choosing a facade paint

When designing a house, the roof colour should be chosen first and then the facade colour matched. The reason is quite simple: it is much cheaper and easier to change (or refresh) the colour of the facade than the colour of the roof. How to choose the right colour for the facade to match the roof?

Brown colour - a lot depends on the shade of brown. But a very versatile colour that goes well with all brown colours is beige or grey. White and tan facades, as well as exposed building materials such as stone or brick, are perfect for this type of roof.

Black - classic white, its various shades and beige, as in the case of brown roofs, look very good in combination with black roofs. Shades of grey also suit black roofs.

Graphite - as with black roofs, grey colours complement the roof colour perfectly. Blue tones should not be forgotten, especially the lighter ones - both sky blue and sea blue on the facade will complement the roof colour perfectly, giving the building a very modern look, typical of suburban neighbourhoods.

Roof and window colour - the same or different?

Once you have matched the colour of the roof to the colour of the building, it is important to remember a very important issue that has a major impact on the external aesthetics of the building, namely the correct choice of windows and doors. In this case, as in the case of the facade, it is advisable to match the colour of this element to the roof colour.

Black roof - in this case, the wood finish of windows and doors should be grey, black or white. Contrasting yellow or red colours are also often used to emphasise the beauty of the surroundings of the house.

Graphite roof - In this case, it is best to emphasise modernity and choose aluminium windows in grey and white shades.

Red or copper roof - in this case, the most common solution is to use window colours or materials that imitate darker wood types.
